Nike Sumo2 SQ 5900 Square Headed Driver

The Nike SasQuatch Sumo2 5900 Driver is the latest club to come out of the Nike development camp this year. Having been launched in Feb 2008 the Sumo2 driver has been designed to push the limits of the golf driver to the maximum. The Sumo2 driver just falls short of the maximum criteria allowed for golf drivers by Britain's governing body the R&A.

Out with Old - In with New Sumo2 Driver

As of January of 2008 the R&A in conjunction with the USPGA of America laid down new guidelines regarding the use of drivers that were allowed in amateur competition. This basically meant that any golfer playing in competitive golf at Club level, had to play with conforming drivers.
A select number of drivers that had been manufactured that featured the latest Big Heads were now non-conforming and had to be resigned to either Ebay or the bin. Enter the Sumo2 driver.

The Nike Sumo 5900 Driver was designed with these new regulations in mind. By pushing the boundaries of golf design, the Nike design team have produced a square headed drive that performs like no other.

Nike Sumo2 5900 - The Big Square Driver

Square headed drivers hit the golf market with a storm last year. They heralded a totally new concept in club head design. The new sumo2 5900 square head driver design was at first thought a bit gimmicky, but soon caught on in the world of golf by giving the golfer a more forgiving driver. All golfers love to blast the ball a country mile. When Nike introduced the Sasquatch Sumo Square Driver in 2007 golfers drooled at the prospect of being able to hit the golf ball out of site but ultimately keep it in play.

Nike claim that the new Sumo2 5900 square driver introduced in the spring of 2008 is the straightest, most accurate square driver they have ever made. They have achieved this by pushing the the clubs MOI and head volume to the absolute maximum whilst still keeping the clubs dimensions within the strict rules now enforced by golfs governing bodies.

The Nike Sumo2 Driver is maxed up to the legal limit of 460cc head volume. Weight distribution is maximised by the Nike Powerbow Weighting system that in effect distributes the weight more evenly towards the outer extremities of the square driver. This optimises head stability and thus produces a more penetrating accurate shot.

Square driver technology developed by Nike has been updated in 2008 by the SQ Sumo2 Geometry design that features in Sumo5900. This updated body shape increases the ball speed of the club face without losing the accuracy of shot demanded by golfers of all levels.

The deeper titanium cup face of the Sumo 5900 square driver is constructed in multi layers which allows a finer distribution of weight across the dimensions of the club head. This results in a golf driver that is ultimately longer, more responsive and deadly accurate. Compare Prices for the Sumo 5900.

Sumo2 Driver - How it compares

Callaway claim to have introduced the square headed drive to the golf market. The Fti Fusion square driver was first seen on tour way back in 2006 when Thomas Bjorn used one in practice at the Volvo Masters. A couple of weeks later Nike introduced the Sasquatch Sumo2 driver and all of a sudden they had become the main talking point in locker rooms and 19th holes around the world.

The main bone of contention was that they were a bit gimmicky and would never catch on. Added to the fact that they can be a bit noisy off the tee put many a golfer off the prospect of having one in the bag.
2 years on they are still with us and appear to have a been a success in certain golf circles. I have met a couple golfers who have become square head driver converts. They say the would never go back to the traditional pear shaped golf driver and are very happy with their purchase of a Sumo2 driver.
